About Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Bethlehem is a colonial and industrial city best known for its past importance in the steel industry including the Bethlehem Steel and its current cultural renaissance of arts and recreation including the Sands Casino and Steelstacks arts center. Bethlehem lies in Northampton and Lehigh counties and borders with the cities of Allentown and Easton. Bethlehem is part of the greater Lehigh Valley community. It has an estimated population of over seventy thousand people.
In 1741, a group of Moravians settled in the banks of the Lehigh River near the Monocacy Creek. They represented what is now knows as the oldest organized Protestant denomination in the world founded by John Hus.
By 1747, thirty-six different trades and industries found their way into Bethlehem. Bethlehem became a center of heavy industry and trade housing the world headquarters of Bethlehem Steel Corporation that still remain there today. Bethlehem is composed of many historical and beautiful homes that feature old character and Victorian charm.
Bethlehem is known today for its modernization in arts and culture. Ever summer Bethlehem hosts Musikfest, a week-long celebration of arts and music. The Sands casino is a four star resort and casino featuring Emeril’s two restaurants and a slew of bars and concerts. Neighboring the Sands Casino is Steelstacks, an arts center including concert and banquet venues along with a movie theatre. Bethlehem is home to prestigious universities including Moravian and Lehigh, both located on the South Side. North side of Bethlehem includes main street with restaurants and shops like Bethlehem Brew Works.
